Antique rugs serve as great reminders of the past, and its beauty and intricacies give its owners an insight into the various cultures and traditions of every period of time in history. Well-maintained and clean rugs ensure that its designs and patterns stay intact for generations to come.

As you walk through your house, you may notice that the appearance of your antique rug is becoming a little dirty. You may then think to think to yourself if it is a good time to clean it and if so, how often you should clean it. The answer is none other than yes. These rugs need gentle cleaning as well as a little more effort to maintain them in desirable condition. However, the cleaning must be done by a professional.

When should it be cleaned?

Do note that cleaning your antique rugs every three to five years has to be done by professionals only. They will have the right tools and skills to restore the fibers of the rugs and remove the dirt that may build up over time. When you are able to clean your rug, it tends to extend its lifespan and prevent its condition from deteriorating too soon from daily wear and tear.

Basic care tips for your antique rugs

One of the most imperative things you should do from the start is to limit the amount of dirt your antique rugs are exposed to. It is highly recommended that you consider placing such rugs away from heavy traffic areas like doors in the home. It is also pertinent that you place rugs in spots that are away from direct sunlight to prevent a case of sun-bleach. Another thing is that you should not place any heavy furniture on your carpets. If you must, furniture cups will be useful to prevent the crushing of the carpet’s pile.

You should also avoid using home vacuum cleaners as they are hard on the rug’s delicate threads. If you really need to vacuum, it is recommended that you turn off the beater bar first. Turning it off is important if you want to avoid tearing up the rug. Consider the age as well as the general wear and tear that antique rugs entail, it is still best to get these rugs cleaned by a professional.

Removing unwanted stains

If you spot small stains on an antique rug, avoid using harsh chemical cleaners at all costs. Depending on the type of stain you encounter, specialized treatment is pertinent to keep it intact. Latex decay, thread breakdown and color bleeding are some of the most common issues with such rugs and trying to take matters into your own hands could cause some form of damage. As mentioned, you should remember to place the rugs at a spot that receives less traffic as well.

If you want the safest and most efficient solution for antique rug cleaning, you can contact Bedrosian Rugs. We have a dedicated team of cleaning professionals that will clean your rugs with the right tools and in an organized fashion.

Having a pint of cold beer with your family and loved ones are possibly one of the best ways to chill out. And whether you are enjoying it after a long day at work or throwing a barbecue gathering for friends and family, it is almost impossible to predict when you will accidentally spill something on your carpets. If you or a guest happens to run into an unexpected beer stain, do not panic. There are a few quick solutions you can try out first.

Method #1

You can start by soaking up as much as beer as you can with a clean towel. Next, take a fair amount of baking soda and sprinkle over the affected area. It would be better if you just sprinkle the baking soda directly on the beer stain. You will want to ensure that you do not want to leave any spots out. Leave the baking soda to sit on top of the beer stain for a full 24-hour period. This process will allow the baking soda to soak up any remaining traces and smell of the beer. Once the 24-hour period is up, simply vacuum up the baking soda and the stain should no longer be there to bother anyone.

Method #2

As soon as you notice beer stains, swift action must be taken to clean up as much of the liquid as possible before it has time to set in. With a carpet spray cleaner, you can spray the foam onto the beer stain or affected area of the carpet. Once the solution has sat for a good ten to fifteen minutes, you can blot the area with a dry and clean towel. To remove any remaining residue, simply vacuum your carpet. If you are dealing with an antique or delicate carpet or rug, vacuuming is not a viable option as it may cause further damage to your prized possession. In this case, a professional carpet cleaner should be called in to help instead.

Method #3

Quickly grab some paper towels and soak up as much of the beer as stain as you can. The faster you do this, the less beer can be absorbed into the carpet. Next, combine one tablespoon of dish washing detergent and one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Soak up the solution with a sponge and work from the outside of the stain by blotting the carpet. If this step is done right, the beer stain should start to gradually disappear. If you wish to remove any remaining vinegar, sponge the area with cold water and then pat dry with a towel.

Do note that these recommendations have a limit and they do not fully guarantee that the beer stain can be removed. Hence, it is much wiser to contact a carpet cleaning specialist from Bedrosian Rugs. You can rest assure that your carpets will be cleaned with the most efficient and safest methods possible. We will keep your carpets intact and ensure that the beer stains are no longer an issue.

Water damage is often caused by a flood, and there are certain hard-to-reach spots that wait for you to uncover its nasty surprise. Such spots include the wall-to-carpet area behind a bookshelf. Removing any major mold problem before continuing with renovation works to make the place more energy efficient is of utmost pertinence.

Before anything is to be done, you should take all the necessary precautions to ensure that none of the mold gets to your body. When you think you have located all the possible affected areas, it is time to call in the professionals. However, you should still read on to understand what you are dealing with.

The dangers of toxic black mold

Toxic mold that grows inside of your home can lead to serious adverse health effects in human beings. Allergic reactions are one of the most common symptoms that people experience when there are signs of mold. This is often associated to fungal sinusitis which is a medical condition that causes nose bleeds and even lesions on the brain.

Other symptoms of long-term exposure to toxic mold and inhalation of mold spores include memory loss, chronic headaches and abdominal cramping. In more dire circumstances, toxic black mold is also known to cause cancer or even may lead to death.

Air sealing the room from the rest of the house

It is important that homeowners isolate the affected room from the rest of their home by turning off certain elements such as the HVAC and furnace systems. The last thing you want to do is to turn on the furnace which will then suck all the mold spores out of the room and let it spread around the rest of your house.

Drywalls are one of the most commonly affected areas

When you start to move furniture away from an area that you think is prone to a mold problem, the signs become more evident as the mold spreads throughout the surface of the drywall. Without the right safety equipment or knowledge, you should not approach it to remove it yourself at all costs. The mold comes off easily and you do not want to risk letting any part of it touch your skin or body.

Call in the professionals

Even if you are able to spot a mold problem on the outside surface of your drywall, the problem tends to run deep into the inner side of the walls. Hence, more parts of the wall need to be removed to facilitate further inspection. Without the necessary tools, it is something that can’t be done on your own. To save yourself from any trouble or harm, simply engage the assistance of a professional.

Your expensive carpets and rugs are very susceptible to mold attacks and other form of water damages. Hence, it is pertinent that you remove them from the scene quickly. If it is not possible to act on your own and mildew has gotten onto your carpets, don’t hesitate to call Bedrosian Rugs today! We will restore your carpet to its original condition and remove any mildew odor that’s common with water damage.

Some homeowners may regard issues caused by water damage with little significance, taking them for granted most of the time. This is a result of the common misconception that the worst consequence of a water overflow is a slippery floor. Hence, these homeowners only try to repair the damage during heavy storms and rains.

As a homeowner who wants to protect their home from suffering under such circumstances, you should dispose such thoughts (think of those area rugs that you need to maintain). Otherwise, a seemingly harmless water damage issue may spiral out of control and become disastrous if immediate remedy is not applied.

What causes water damage?

There are various events that lead to water damage, and they include plumbing fixtures that get clogged, problematic dishwasher or broken pipes. These events often lead to an overflow of liquid from a particular source to different areas of one’s house. When cracks occur in certain areas of the home, it may trigger the release of confined pressure. When this happens, a massive water leak may follow. Additionally, floods and storms can worsen the water damage in your home as well.

Prolonged effects on your health

One of the most prominent long term effects is that it affects your health. Excessive moisture encourages the reproduction and growth of mold, and these increases the risks of triggering respiratory related disorders. Bacteria and fungi may also lodge themselves in your respiratory tract, causing you to experience difficulty when breathing.

Mold may also affect the quality of a child’s immune system as fungi can release harmful substances when it is given chance to thrive in a moist environment. Additionally, when mold overgrows you will be more susceptible to fungal infections. When you are susceptible to such infections, they may not be life-threatening but they will definitely affect your quality of life and it may even spread to other family members.

Prolonged effects in your home

You may have never thought that something such as a simple leak, can not only cause a flood in your home but may also lead to more severe circumstances such as fire emergencies. In addition to that, there are many appliances and personal items that are at risk when water damage is present.

When a flood does occur, it may contain soil which may lodge in your expensive carpets and rugs and make them look dirtier or older than they should. These little occurrences may seem insignificant at first but in the long run, they get more difficult to deal with and you may not be able to fully restore their original luster if the damage has taken its toll.

After a flood, it is highly essential that sanitize your wall to wall carpets as these are the places where excessive moisture hits. To protect your home and its items from further damage, you should see the pertinence of rectifying water damage issues right away. If you require professional cleaning services, Bedrosian Rugs looks forward to assist you!

Whether you have an older dog or a young puppy at home, accidents are bound to happen. By accidents, it may mean your dog might urinate onto the carpet without your knowledge until sometime later when a bad smell starts to emit from it. Another way you will know is when guests walk into the room and ask if you smell something. Here are some of the essential steps you can take to find that offending area of the carpets quickly and deal with it without delay!

Blot up the pet’s urine right away

Always act quickly as it is much easier to get to the wee when it is still wet. If you manage to remove most of the urine, you will able to lessen the bacteria that are responsible for causing the unpleasant smell. That’s right! It is not the urine itself that’s at fault. To remove the urine, grab a kitchen roll and tear off a suitable length of at least six sheets. Fold the kitchen paper into a six-sheet thick square and press it down to the wet area – you may do so with your foot or hands if you are wearing gloves.

Use a black light flashlight to find dried urine

If you only realized that there is dried pet urine in your carpet, you can use a black light source to track down dried urine stains that can’t be spotted with the naked eye. This type of flashlight typically consists of an ultraviolet, low energy LED bulb. Simply wave it or shine it over your affected carpet and those dried stains will be revealed for you to deal with them. However, some evidences have shown that this works 98% of the time and only 2% does not show up as expected.

The possibility of using hydrogen peroxide

If you are one that can act quickly, using vinegar and baking soda should be sufficient. However, if you plan to use hydrogen peroxide, ensure that you only use a 3% solution and always check for color-fastness on a hidden area first. Some solutions may bleach the fibers of your carpet, and make the situation even worse. Remember to mix half a cup of the solution with a teaspoon of washing liquid (like those that you use to wash dishes in the sink). Never ever use dish washing machine detergent for this technique. Oftentimes, it will be easier if you put the makeshift cleaning solution into a spray bottle to avoid excessive wetting. After spraying, work the solution into the carpet with a toothbrush.

Finishing up

If you chose to use baking soda, and whether or not you used hydrogen peroxide, the last step involves you vacuuming the cleaning contents out of your carpet. It would also help a lot if you can attach a pet hair remover on your vacuum cleaner. This will break up any baking soda that has already hardened. If not, you can use a small, stiff brush to break those stubborn bits.

While you can repeat any necessary steps until the odor is gone, sometimes it is better if you just engage a professional carpet cleaner to do the cleaning for you. Your carpet will undergo a thorough cleaning process and will smell fresh and even look better in the end. Contact Bedrosian Rugs today for more information on our carpet cleaning services!

It might be one of those lazy mornings when you sit yourself in your favorite chair while reading the morning paper and enjoying a cup of coffee, when you suddenly spill your coffee due to some abrupt distractions such as your phone or someone or a pet bumps into your arm. Fret not, here are some important tips to remove such stains:

Beginning the cleaning process

Certain contents in the coffee are difficult to remove, and they are sugar and cream in particular. The reason why these contents are giving you a hard time is because you will be fighting a few different stains at the same time. However, cleaning the stain up is still possible and you will be able to remove the coffee stain from your upholstered furniture in no time.

Paper towels and other towels with great absorbent properties are your best items to have around when a spill occurs. These towels can be used to efficiently dab up any excess liquid. Do this as much as you can if you do not want the coffee to sink in any deeper into your precious upholstery. In addition to using towels, you may also spray tonic water, or even carbonated drinks such as seven up and sprite on to the affected area. Spray before dabbing up with your towels. Carbonation, amazingly, has that ability to make that dark stain surface to the top of the upholstery and allow you to dab and blot up the coffee.

What to do when faced with stubborn stains

You should continue the above step until the stain is gone or you are unable to remove anymore of the stain from the upholstered furniture. When you are trying to dry the upholstery, always do so by blotting only. Rubbing will just cause the stain to spread out of its initial boundary. If you notice that the stubborn stain remains in the upholstery, use a mixture of clear, bleach-free liquid detergent and water and spray over the affected area.

Remove cleaning solutions from the upholstery

Remember to repeat the process of spraying, blotting then drying until the stain show signs of disappearing or until you learn that no more of the stain can be purged from the upholstery. After that, proceed to rinse the upholstery with a clear water spray. Same thing, dab and blot the upholstery to remove all the moisture you can from the material. Rinsing the upholstery allows you to remove any excess suds, detergent and soap, as well as other minute traces of the initial coffee stain.

If you require a last resort, you can spray hydrogen peroxide to give your upholstery a final treatment. When you spray a solution like this, do not over-wet it and allow it to dry properly. You may need to repeat the process of spraying hydrogen peroxide and dabbing up the moisture to remove the coffee stain.

As mentioned, coffee stains should be removed from upholstered furniture right away. If you find that you do not have the proper means to execute the steps in time, you should contact cleaning specialists from Bedrosian Rugs to clean your upholstered furniture for you to prevent further damage.

Average time taken for mold growth

Typically, the time needed for it to grow is from 24 hours to 48 hours. Simply put, mold grows and spreads very quickly and it might not be visible until a few days later. Babies possess many positive attributes and they include being cuddly, curious, adorable and innocent. On the other end of the spectrum, babies are messy in a sense that they often leave their caregivers and parents to clean up many items around them covered in saliva, vomit and other things that are unmentionable. If your baby has recently vomited on your couch, do not fret as here are some of the ways you can get that baby vomit out this instance.

Removing the stain on the upholstered furniture

First and foremost, you should act immediately upon spotting your baby’s vomit on your upholstered furniture. If you are able to do so, you can remove the stains much more effectively and before it really seeps into the fibers of your upholstery. You should wipe the vomit into an unwanted plastic bag with the help of paper towels. Make sure to put on your gloves as well, if you have them.

Next, you will need to take off any removable covers from your cushion and place in your washing machine. You are lucky if the vomit hits only the covers. If not, you might want to read on. If you are not so lucky and the vomit has already come into contact with the cushions itself, your best ally is vinegar.

Vinegar is one of the most effective, inexpensive and convenient cleaners around and they can clean baby vomit stains effectively. Not only does it remove nasty smells, but it also removes bacteria and mold. Vinegar is handy when it comes to cleaning tasks and it is environmentally-friendly as well.

Be sure to mix the vinegar with warm water before applying it to your couch. You will need a brush or washcloth to scrub the mixture onto your couch. Ensure that the scrubbing is thorough enough for the stain to become saturated. When you notice that the stain is gone, rinse the affected area with clean water and blot with a towel. Leave the area to dry.

An alternative to vinegar

If vinegar is currently unavailable in your home, you can try combining water with dish soap. Ensure it is well-mixed enough and is in a soapy solution form. Just like how you applied the vinegar, you must saturate the soapy solution too. Follow up with some scrubbing, blotting and drying. If either dish soap or vinegar is not successful the first time round, you should repeat the steps until the area becomes spotless and clean. If the stain remains after several attempts, you might want to call in the professionals.

Getting rid of the odor from the upholstery

After you managed to remove the vomit stains, an odor might still linger around. This means you need to spray more vinegar and leave the spot to dry afterwards. Though the vinegar might smell as strong, stay patient and let everything dry before judging the success of the solution. For added strength, some multi-purpose cleaning product like baking soda is recommended. The baking soda should be sprinkled onto the affected area after the vinegar is applied. This time round, leave the spot to dry overnight and vacuum off the powdery contents the next day.

If you wish to keep your upholstery truly clean, simply contact our Bedrosian cleaning technicians to do the hard work for you. We also offer the best cleaning solutions for chintz, jacquards, cottons, prints and velvets when it comes to upholstery.

Water damage can occur from different types of sources and they include broken pipes, clogged toilets, and excessive moisture behind walls, plumbing leaks and even foundation cracks. After which, one of the most common by-products of these occurrences is mildew.

Mildew is no way beneficial for one’s home as well as the occupants within the property. Mildew typically multiplies in a flat pattern and may share a downy or powdery appearance. Downy mildew looks yellowish at the start and turns brown after some time, while powdery mildew is white at the start and later turns yellow.

As the mildew grows, it may creep into your carpets and soon an unpleasant odor forms and gets circulated throughout the affected area. If you are looking for ways to eliminate mildew from your affected carpets, here are some of the top tips to get you started on cleaning your carpets.

Dry the affected area first

While such odors naturally occur after water damage, it is pertinent that you get rid of them as soon as you can. Before you get started, you have to ensure that the area that was affected by water damage has dried up. To ensure that the aforementioned happens, it is recommended that you leave all the windows open while making sure that the temperature is at a moderate level. Avoid doing so if it is too moist outside.

You may also wish to use a box fan to circulate cool air around the affected area. However, make sure that the water does not affect the fan especially if it is placed on the ground.

Attempt to mask the mildew odor with certain household items

Once you have done the process of removing any excess water that came from the water damage, one of the quickest ways to mitigate any overpowering odors is to use a mixture of vanilla, vinegar and baking soda to sprinkle over the affected area. Allow the sprinkled mixture to sit. If this technique does not seem to work well enough, the situation may not be suitable for you to handle alone. Take a look at the next best course of action.

Engage professional services

Sometimes homemade remedies are incapable of solving issues that caused by water damage, especially if mold and mildew is present. In certain cases, the odors caused by mildew can indicate the presence of more of the aforementioned hidden deep behind your walls. It is not hard to agree that there are furniture pieces that can remain in the family through generations. Whether it is your grandmother’s favorite sofa or your great uncle’s armchair, some items are worth holding on to. Replacing upholstery can be expensive but the fact is that it may be difficult to find something that will look as good as the original.

If you are worried that your furniture item will look out of place in your modern home, you need not worry. Your beloved furniture can actually help to enhance your décor while also acting as a conversation starter. Normal wear and tear can leave the upholstery looking dull, but with professional upholstery cleaning, you can give your precious furniture a new lease of life.

Invest in professional cleaning

It might look like a simple thing to clean the upholstery yourself but if you are trying to keep the item in the best shape, this might not be the best thing. Using some of the solutions available in the market to clean your old upholstery can result in damage. Simply vacuuming the item will not give you the results that you desire. It makes sense to get professional services because you can leave the job to people with the relevant expertise and equipment. Make sure that you use a reputable cleaning service for the job.

Dealing with old stains

Any furniture is bound to have collected stains over the years. This is especially the case with an old armchair that may have been in the family for decades. Apart from marring the appearance, stains can lead to damage. Years of wine, food, oil and other stains can also leave the furniture with a rather unpleasant odor. Old stains can be difficult to remove but fortunately, the experts have solutions that can help to remove tough stains. They also have experience that comes in handy in stain removal.

Restoring the furniture

Regular upholstery cleaning can ensure that your furniture continues to look clean and fresh for a long time. It also helps to take care of your furniture item and this means preventing any further staining. If the item has any form of damage, make sure that you get the best repair services. A good cleaning service will do everything they can to ensure that your upholstery is restored almost to its original state. Professional cleaning will also involve ensuring that the environment is free of dust and dirt.

Expert upholstery cleaning will help to get rid of dirt that may have settled on the fabric over the years. It is important to realize that mold is common on old furniture even though it may not be visible to the untrained eye. The professionals have the skills to ensure that mold, mildew and other stains are removed effectively. By using the advanced cleaning methods, the professionals are able to ensure that the fabric retains its good look.
